Necedah — Hunters with disabilities will have a unique chance to enjoy one of Wisconsin’s signature traditions with help from Wisconsin River Power Company (WRPCO). WRPCO is now taking applications for its Deer Hunt for Hunters with Disabilities — the only time each year the Petenwell Wildlife Area is open to hunters.

Applications for the 18th annual hunt in October are being accepted through July 1.

Continuing a cherished tradition for hunters with disabilities

WRPCO offers its Deer Hunt for Hunters with Disabilities to provide a quality hunting experience for Wisconsin residents with disabilities. Any hunter with a Wisconsin Class A, B, C or D disability permit may apply to attend the three-day event.

Space is limited to 10 hunters to provide a safe, successful hunt. Individuals with disabilities who have not had the opportunity to hunt in many years and veterans who have a disability related to their military service are especially encouraged to apply.

A memorable experience for participants, volunteers

During the event, each hunter is guided by an assistant around the 750-acre Petenwell Wildlife Area, located between WRPCO’s Petenwell and Castle Rock hydroelectric dams. Participants also get to meet and share stories with other hunters and WRPCO’s staff while gathering at the base camp each day.

WRPCO employees and retired employees of its parent company, WEC Energy Group, volunteer their time during the hunt. They transport hunters to and from deer stands, help with hunting-related tasks and organize three large meals for the entire group.
